Book excerpt: Simple, descriptive and yet powerfully effective. For over a quarter of a century, the name Sealink was synonymous with ferry travel around the British Isles. Sealink and Beyond reviews this famous business from 1969, through privatisation and hostile take-over, until 1995 when the name was quietly dropped. Incorporating significant new research, the book provides a complete operational history and also seeks to place Sealink in the context of an era of rapid change: from the after-effects of Beeching to the Irish troubles, the Falklands War and Thatcherite privatisation, the Sealink story was heavily shaped by a country at a political, economic and social cross-roads. Aspects also explored include the traveller experience, port operations, cruises and Sealink's associated companies. With the former Sealink fleet now dispersed around the globe, the authors have spent over a decade tracking down the surviving ships and matters are brought up to date in an extensively illustrated fleet list covering over 150 vessels in both historic and modern images.
